RIDE ALONG PROGRAM (OBSERVERS):...
Purpose:
The
following policies should be utilized in the event that an
observer is accompanying an SCVMA crew.
Policy
and Procedure:
The
approval of one of the Chiefs is required prior to scheduling
or involvement of Observers with any operation activities of
SCVMA.
Observers
must be approved at least twenty four (24) hour in advance of
a shift.
All
Observers shall be the responsibility of the "Crew
Chief" and shall abide by the Standard Operating
Procedures of SCVMA.
All
Observers shall read and sign the Observer Waiver form. The
completed waiver form shall be completed prior to the
beginning of the observation period.
An
observer may be declined permission to "ride along"
if the crwe complement exceeds safe operating standards or the
Crew Chief declines to accept responsiblitiy for the observer.
Observer
time shall be limitied to a maximum of Sixty hours.
EMT
students may observe for an unlimited ammount of time.
Observers
shall only observe activities of the SCVMA crew and shall not
engage in any of the following activities:
- Patient
Care
- Patient
lifing and Moving
- Utilization
of Equipment
In
the event of injury to an observer or misconduct on the part
of an observer, the Crew Chief shall notify the Chief and
submit an incident report prior to the end of the shift.
Observers
must be at least 16 years of age. (If under 18 a signed
permission slip must be completed by the observers
parent/guardian and the parent/guardian must speak with the
Chief.
Observer
Duties:
Must
dress apropriately in accordance with SCVMA and Osha guidlines.
Will
act in a professional manner both at station and on asignments.
Will
ride in the rear patient compartment of the Ambulance wen
resonding to emergency calls.
Will
Not assist in any way with patient care, scene control,
patient extrication, or carrying equipment. The Observer is to
learn by watching.
If
there is a problem with an observer the Chief will be notified
immediatelly. In his absence the first then second Asst. Chief
will be notified. If all efforts to obtain a Chief fail, the
Duty Crew Officer will have the right to send the observer
home. An incident report will be filled out by te duty crew
Officer and placed under the office door with-in 1 hour of
incident.
